Two cases filed over Friday clashes with Dhaka police

 Ramna police and Motijheel police have recorded two cases over Muslim hardliners’ clashes with law enforcers following Jummah prayers in Dhaka on Friday.

The clash occurred when protesters, agitated by an incident where a Quran was allegedly dishonored at a Hindu temple in Cumilla, led a march from Baitul Mukarram Mosque and were blocked by police.

The cases, filed in the early hours of Saturday at the respective police stations, identified 21 suspects and accused at least 4,000 other unnamed individuals, police said.

Monirul Islam, chief of the Ramna Police Station, said ten people were arrested from the scene on Friday and law enforcers say they are working to identify the others involved. The case at Ramna station named 10 people and accused nearly 1,500 other unnamed individuals, he said.

“On Saturday, a court granted us two days to question 10 arrestees, including Hasan, Habibur Rahman, and Razzak, in our custody,” Monirul added.

The case with Paltan police names Khilafat Andolan leader Amir Jafrullah Khan and 10 others, while also accusing 2,000 – 2,500 other unnamed individuals.

“Six people were arrested following the incidents on Friday,” said Salauddin Mia, the Paltan police chief.

“Amir Jafrullah and five others named in the case are still at large. We are working to arrest them and identify the suspects who were not named.”

The OC added that the arrestees had been remanded for a day.

Both police station chiefs said the cases were over obstructing government work and attacking police personnel.

BNP leaders join rally of Dr Kamal’s ‘Jatiya Oikya Prokriya’

The rally kicked off at the Mahanagar Natyamancha in Dhaka’s Gulistan at 3.00 pm on Saturday with patriotic songs sung by Udichi singers.

The chief guest of the rally is Jukto Front Chairman AQM Badrudozza.

BNP has lost people’s support and goes whining to the UN: Quader

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader says that the BNP has gone whining to the UN in an effort to return to power because it has lost people’s support.

The road transport and bridges minister made the remarks during the inaugural programme of the Awami League’s Science and Technology Sub-Committee website at the Institution of Engineers in Dhaka’s Ramna on Saturday.

“When a party bankrupts itself to such a level that it is debasing the country, it shows it has lost the support of the people and is whining to UN.”

“Today the BNP has become such a useless party that it complains to foreigners at every little thing. And they continue whining to the populace. If their complaints are valid then the people will vote for them instead of us.”

Quader said that if Bangladesh’s people do not vote for them, no foreign power will be able to restore the BNP to power.

“As our leader has said, we will stay in power if the people vote for us. The Awami League has no interest in retaining power by force.”

Quader spoke about the government’s development work.

“The BNP does not take any pride in our country’s achievements. Sheikh Hasina dreams of the next generation, while the BNP only dreams of the next election.”

“They do not understand anything aside from power. The BNP and its supporters only engage in power-hungry politics.”

Quader also discussed the problems associated with Facebook.

“Anyone who thinks the problems will disappear if Facebook is shut down is wrong,” Quader said. “It has good aspects and bad aspects. We must mitigate the bad. We must make and distribute information.”

“We have been unable to properly curb the propaganda by the opponents of the Liberation War during the two recent protest movements [the quota reform and road safety protests]. We have not been able to counter these cyber-attacks. It is from this experience that we have taken the initiative to form this sub-committee, so that it can monitor the situation and fill any gaps.”

Govt-formed medical team says it found ‘no critical concerns’ about Khaleda

The medical board formed by the government to check up on the health of BNP chief Khaleda Zia has not found any ‘pressing concerns’, says Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital Director Brigadier General Abdullah-Al-Harun.

The doctors on the team recommended that the BSMMU facilities would suffice if Khaleda wishes to be admitted to a hospital.

Asked about the findings of the board, Abdullah-Al-Harun said: “They say there were no major new health issues.”

Khaleda had previously been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, he said. She experiences pains in her arms and back because of it and the doctors have made arrangements for it, he said.

The 73-year-old did not have any heart, blood pressure or diabetic issues, Abdullah-Al-Harun said.

“The medical board has treated her. If she still believes that she needs to be admitted to a hospital, then she can be admitted to a hospital with disciplined care,” Abdullah-Al-Harun said citing the members of the medial team.

In that case they recommended that she be taken to BSMMU, according to Abdullah-Al-Harun.
