A college student was stabbed to death in Shakhari Bazar of Old Dhaka following an altercation over spreading colours celebrating Dol Jatra, a festival of Bengali Hindus, on Thursday.
The victim is Md Raonak Hossain, 18, son of Shahid Hossain, a student of class XII of New Paltan Line School and College and a resident of Nilambar Saha Road of Hazaribagh of Old Dhaka.
Sub-inspector Suman Chandra Nath of Kotwali police station said Raonak was stabbed during an altercation over spreading colour during Dol festival near Shani Temple of Shakhari Bazar.
He said they had picked up seven boys and girls to know about the incident as they were witnesses.
Masum, a friend of the victim, said they – four boys and four girls - went to Shakhari Bazar near Pogose School to participate in holi, a part of Dol Jatra festival.
‘We played holi and at around 11:30am, we took a walk. That is when a group of 10 to 15 young men appeared suddenly and separated Raonok from us. They began to beat him mercilessly,’ said Masum.
At one stage, they stabbed Raonak and fled, after locals rushed the spot, leaving him in a pool of blood, he said.
He said that Raonak was taken to National Medical College Hospital from where he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival at about 1:30pm.
No case was lodged in this connection until 8:45pm, said the Kotwali police.
A class IX student of Matuail High School, Md Bakir, 17, son of Md Sultan Mia and Moyna Begum of Matuail Paschimpara under Jatrabari in the capital succumbed to his injuries at DMCH on Thursday at about 5:00am, hours after he was stabbed by his rivals near his residence on Wednesday around 6:00pm, said DMCH police outpost acting in-charge Babul Mia.
